Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, expressed deep sadness over the devastating train accident in Odisha, which claimed the lives of hundreds and left around 900 injured.
In a heartfelt tweet, Kohli conveyed his condolences, saying, “Saddened to hear about the tragic train accident in Odisha. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
The death toll from the tragic train accident in the state of Odisha has risen to 280, with concerns of more casualties as many remain trapped in the wreckage, as reported by India Today.
The catastrophic incident occurred on Friday when the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed and was subsequently struck by the Howrah Superfast Express on an adjacent track. Reports from local publications suggest that a third train, believed to be a cargo train, was also involved, making it one of the deadliest rail accidents in recent times in the country.
In response to the situation, the Indian authorities have deployed the army to assist in the rescue operation, working in collaboration with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), fire department, and other rescue teams. Ambulances and medical teams are tirelessly working to retrieve the bodies and provide medical aid to the injured.
Odisha Health Minister Niranjan Pujari assured that the situation is under control, and search and rescue operations are ongoing, as cited by the publication.
The Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has ordered a high-level investigation into the derailment. Furthermore, a one-day state mourning has been declared to mourn the tragic train crash. Hospitals are on high alert, and additional doctors have been mobilized to provide necessary medical support.
While train accidents unfortunately occur with some frequency in India, the government has made substantial investments and implemented technological upgrades to enhance railway safety, resulting in a reduction in such incidents in recent years.
