Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh has announced that Pakistan’s first project to produce “green” hydrogen will be initiated in Sindh. The project, powered by wind and solar energy, aims to generate 150,000 kg of green hydrogen per day and is expected to create thousands of job opportunities.
In October 2021, the Sindh government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese firm to commence this groundbreaking project. The objective is to establish a 400 MW capacity plant that will produce green hydrogen, a clean fuel derived from renewable sources like solar panels and wind turbines. Unlike fossil fuels, green hydrogen, when burned, emits no greenhouse gases and only releases water, making it an environmentally sustainable alternative.
To accommodate the project, the Sindh government has allocated 7,000 acres of land in the Gharo district of Thatta. The completion of the project is estimated to take three years. This endeavor marks a significant stride for Pakistan in its transition towards a cleaner and greener energy future. Additionally, the project is expected to stimulate the economy and generate numerous employment opportunities.
By embracing the potential of green hydrogen production, Sindh and Pakistan demonstrate their commitment to sustainable energy solutions and contribute to global efforts in mitigating climate change.
