Awami Muslim League (AML) chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed has expressed his disappointment with the government’s inability to meet the economic targets set for the fiscal year 2022-23. He shared his views on the Pakistan Economic Survey 2022-23 presented by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
In a tweet, Sheikh Rasheed stated that he had never seen such an economic survey before and even Ishaq Dar seemed to be unaware of the state of the national exchequer.
Despite accepting the demands of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government failed to revive the stalled loan program, Rasheed added.
He further criticized the government’s lack of understanding regarding the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar.
Earlier, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar presented the Pakistan Economic Survey 2022-23, which highlighted the performance of the coalition government in the outgoing fiscal year.
Dar acknowledged that Pakistan’s GDP growth for the outgoing fiscal year stood at a mere 0.29 percent, significantly lower than the target of 5 percent.
He also mentioned the impact of floods in the first quarter of the fiscal year, which caused extensive damage to agricultural land, disrupted domestic supply, and resulted in substantial GDP losses and rehabilitation expenditures.
Sheikh Rasheed’s comments reflect his dissatisfaction with the government’s economic performance and its failure to achieve the desired targets.
