According to the latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) report released by Transparency International, Pakistan has failed to make any meaningful improvement in its overall score and ranking. The index ranked the country at 140 out of 180 countries.
The report stated that there has been little progress made since last year and that most countries had failed to make significant efforts in tackling corruption. It cited weak governance structures and lack of accountability as being major contributors to the lack of improvement. In addition, it placed blame on the current government for allowing political scandals to distract from anti-corruption efforts.
The Transparency International report highlighted a troubling trend in the global fight against corruption. Out of 180 countries surveyed, Pakistan was ranked 140th with an alarming score of 27 out of 10 (the lowest in the last decade).

Similarly, 155 countries have failed to make any meaningful progress since 2012 and 26 countries experienced their worst scores ever. The results are indicative that most nations across the globe aren’t winning this battle yet. Over two-thirds of countries around the world yielded below 50 points indicating a high degree of corrupt practices exists worldwide.
Despite promises of widespread reform, the corruption watchdog noted that in 2018 Pakistan experienced a statistically significant downward trend, observed for over the last 10 years. The report asserted that it was time for decisive action to combat illicit financial activities and protect against exploitation.
