The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), two opposition parties in the Sindh Assembly, have been unable to agree on the appointment of the opposition leader.
During a meeting between the MQM-P delegation and GDA leaders, the MQM-P sought the support of the GDA for their candidate to assume the role of the opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly. However, the GDA leadership declined the request.
The GDA leader reportedly expressed that they had previously supported the MQM-P candidate in the Senate elections and now it was their turn to appoint the opposition leader in Sindh.
Currently, the opposition leader seat is held by Haleem Adil Sheikh of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). However, due to recent defections of PTI MPAs, the party has lost 10 out of its 30 seats in the provincial assembly.
With 21 seats in the provincial assembly, the MQM-P has reached out to the Grand Democratic Alliance, which holds 14 seats, seeking their support in replacing the opposition leader, according to sources.
The matter of changing the opposition leader is expected to be considered during the session of the Sindh Assembly scheduled for June 7.
In addition, reports emerged that the MQM-P intends to give the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) a tough time in the Sindh Assembly. The party held a significant meeting in Bahadurabad to formulate its political strategy amidst the rapidly changing political landscape.
The inability of the MQM-P and GDA to reach a consensus on the opposition leader position reflects the complexities and dynamics of political alliances and power-sharing arrangements in the Sindh Assembly.
