Renowned Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi will not be returning to FC Barcelona, as he is set to sign with MLS side Inter Miami.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news on his Twitter handle, revealing that Messi could make his debut for Miami in either July or August.
After leaving French side Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the current season, Messi had been considering a reunion with Barcelona, the club where he rose to fame from 2004 to 2021. However, Barcelona’s financial difficulties reportedly hindered the possibility of the reunion.
Last month, PSG suspended Messi for two weeks due to his absence from a training session, as he had traveled to Saudi Arabia. During his suspension, Messi was not permitted to train or play with the first team and did not receive his salary.
Reports suggest that PSG manager Christophe Galtier informed the players that they would have two days off, Monday and Tuesday, if they won against Lorient on Sunday, April 30. However, the players were unexpectedly called in for training on Monday, May 1, following their defeat.
According to ESPN, Messi, 35, had requested permission to travel to Saudi Arabia as part of his sponsorship obligations as a Saudi ambassador. Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos granted him permission in the event of a win or draw but not a defeat. However, after PSG’s 3-1 loss to Lorient, Messi traveled to Saudi Arabia without seeking permission again, causing him to miss training on Monday.
This incident reportedly created tensions within the dressing room, with some players expressing dissatisfaction.
Messi had joined PSG from Barcelona in 2021 on a two-year contract.
