An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has ordered the imprisonment of 13 female detainees, including Khadija Shah, a supporter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the prime suspect in the Jinnah House attack on May 9. The court, presided over by Judge Abhar Gul Khan, issued the decision after a hearing of the case.
The police presented the thirteen women, including Shah and Sanam Javed, before the court, requesting an extension of their remand. The police stated that they needed more time to recover petrol bombs and stolen items believed to be in possession of the accused.
However, the court declined to grant further physical remand and ordered that the women be sent to jail for a 14-day judicial remand.
In a separate case, the ATC extended the judicial remand of PTI Central Punjab President Dr. Yasmin Rashid, who is facing charges of making speeches to incite violence.
Furthermore, the judicial remand of former governor of Punjab, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, in the Askari Tower case was also extended.
Earlier, Khadija Shah, a Pakistani-origin US citizen, was granted consular access by the Punjab Home Department. The decision was made following instructions from the interior ministry after a formal request was made by the United States. The US government has been monitoring Shah’s case and has urged foreign governments to adhere to consular notifications when American citizens are detained, according to State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel.
