Reports indicate that Toyota is preparing to produce a sub-Hilux small pickup truck that will compete with models like the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick.
While Toyota has been tight-lipped about the details, it is known that the mini pickup truck will be smaller than the Hilux. Sources suggest that the truck is slated for release in 2025 or 2026.
During a recent media event, Leon Theron, the Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa, provided some insights. Theron confirmed that the upcoming truck would not be a half-ton bakkie, as referred to in South Africa for pickup trucks. He mentioned that it would offer a higher load capacity than certain smaller car-based “half-tons” found in Latin America. Theron expressed confidence in the truck’s potential success, stating that they were actively developing it to make a significant impact in the market.

The report suggests that Toyota’s Prospecton Plant in Durban, located on South Africa’s east coast, could be responsible for manufacturing the vehicle. The truck is expected to primarily target African and emerging markets, and it remains unclear if it will be introduced in other regions.
