The popular television drama series “Tere Bin” has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks, drawing criticism from the audience and catching the attention of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra). The regulatory body has issued a stern warning to the creators of the show in response to the content of episode 47.

Pemra expressed concerns regarding a particular scene in which the leading characters, Meerab (played by Yumna Zaidi) and Murtasim (played by Wahaj Ali), share an intimate moment. In the preceding episode, Meerab slaps and spits at Murtasim’s face during an argument, provoking a furious response from him. The subsequent scene implied that marital rape or assault might occur. However, it was revealed that the act was consensual, but both characters felt guilty about their actions.

According to Pemra’s notice, this aspect of the drama’s content violates Pemra’s rules and the Electronic Media Regulatory Rules of 2015, which prohibit the broadcast of television dramas containing “indecent content.” Pemra’s primary focus is to maintain cultural, religious, and ethical sensitivities in television programming. While recognizing artistic freedom and creative expression, the authority emphasized the importance of responsible storytelling that upholds societal values.

Pemra stated in 2019, “Such content is not only distressing for viewers but is also against the commonly accepted standards of decency.”

The recent notice directed Geo Entertainment and the creators of “Tere Bin” to immediately remove the objectionable material and cautioned them against any future occurrences. Failure to comply may result in further action being taken by the regulatory body.

This is not the first time Pemra has taken action against dramas. Previous instances include dramas such as “Jalan,” “Pyar Ke Sadkay,” and “Ishqiya.”

The notice serves as a reminder that Pemra is vigilant in ensuring that television content adheres to the established guidelines, and it highlights the authority’s commitment to preserving cultural and ethical values in society.
