Former Pakistani bowler Mohammad Amir has faced criticism from fans of captain Babar Azam for expressing his opinions on the batter’s T20 performance.
Amir, known for discussing Babar’s contribution to limited-overs cricket, claimed that supporters of the skipper frequently criticize him on social media.
Ahead of the eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the experienced cricketer had stated that bowling to Babar or a tailender hitter was similar to him since his focus was solely on taking wickets.
Amir’s statement sparked offense among Babar’s fans and supporters, who believed it undermined his batting prowess. Consequently, Amir decided to clarify his remarks.

During an appearance on a local show, the 31-year-old was questioned about his statement due to the backlash he had received. In response, Amir lightheartedly commented, “First of all, Babar is not my ex-fiancé that I won’t like him.”
He continued, “Babar has been playing for five years, and we have never had a heated argument. There has always been a mutual understanding between us, and as a junior, he has always shown me respect.”
Amir emphasized that his opinion had been misinterpreted, stating, “I have always said that he is a great batsman in Tests and ODIs. In T20s, I have a different opinion about him. As a bowler, I don’t find Babar threatening in the T20 format.”
He further expressed his frustration at the misrepresentation of his statement, saying, “If someone misinterprets this statement, then I can only pray for their guidance.”
Earlier this month, Amir also addressed the issue on his YouTube channel, reiterating his admiration for Babar’s batting skills. He clarified that his point was about the importance of taking wickets regardless of the batsman’s position in the lineup.
Amir emphasized, “For me, every wicket is important, whether it is Babar’s or a tailender’s. Whether it’s a situation where 12 runs are needed in the last 2 overs and 8 wickets are down, tailenders are the ones playing, right? So they are also equally important to dismiss.”
In his video, Amir urged those who had misinterpreted his remarks to review his previous interviews, where he consistently praised Babar as the best batsman in Pakistan.
Amid the controversy, Amir aimed to clarify his perspective, highlighting the significance of dismissing every batsman regardless of their reputation or role in the team.
