Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in response to the violent protests on May 9 following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, referred to the events as a “tragic and heart-rending” wake-up call for Pakistan. He emphasized the need to identify and expose individuals who aim to undermine the foundations of the country.
The prime minister’s remarks were made during the observance of Youm-i-Takreem Shuhada-i-Pakistan, a day dedicated to paying tribute to the country’s martyrs. Earlier, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir condemned the attack on military installations and memorials on May 9 and announced plans to honor the nation’s martyrs.
According to Radio Pakistan, commemorative ceremonies were held at martyrs’ memorials, including one at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi attended by COAS Munir and his predecessor, retired General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
In a statement posted on Twitter, PM Shehbaz said, “Today the nation is solemnly observing Youm-i-Takreem Shuhada-i-Pakistan to pay its glowing tributes to our heroes, ghazis, and martyrs and express its unflinching solidarity with their families.”
He viewed the tragic incidents of May 9 not just as violent protests but as part of a sinister plan. The prime minister highlighted the clear build-up to the shameful events, emphasizing how the pursuit of power led some individuals to commit unprecedented acts.
By targeting and desecrating the monuments of martyrs and attacking the symbols of the state, the miscreants not only attacked the idea and identity of Pakistan but also gave cause for celebration to the country’s enemies, PM Shehbaz stated.
He stressed that the nation knows how to protect the honor of its martyrs and that the events of May 9 should serve as a wake-up call. It is crucial to identify and expose those who seek to destroy the foundations of Pakistan. The prime minister noted that May 9 drew a line between the protectors and builders of Pakistan and those who wish to weaken it.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to upholding the honor and respect of the country’s martyrs. He emphasized that Pakistan’s existence is rooted in the spiritual covenant between its people and the martyrs. The prime minister expressed gratitude for their sacred blood, which forms the strong foundation of Pakistan.
President Dr. Arif Alvi also conveyed his message on this occasion, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Pakistan’s ancestors and security forces. He acknowledged the significant role of the security forces in defending the country’s integrity and security, defeating terrorism, and providing assistance during natural calamities and pandemics. President Alvi highlighted the need for unity to overcome the various challenges facing Pakistan and pledged to never forget the valiant martyrs.
Both the prime minister and the president reiterated the nation’s pride in the martyrs and their commitment to honoring their sacrifices for the motherland.
