The Pakistani government is contemplating the ban of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the political party led by former prime minister Imran Khan, according to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. This decision comes in the midst of political turmoil in the country, which was sparked by Imran’s arrest on corruption charges on May 9. He was subsequently released on bail as ordered by the court.

Imran, who vehemently denies the corruption charges, is currently engaged in a confrontation with the present government and state institutions. Defence Minister Asif informed reporters that the banning of PTI is being considered due to the party’s attack on the foundations of the state, an unprecedented occurrence that cannot be tolerated.

The arrest of Imran Khan triggered violent protests throughout the country, resulting in attacks on military establishments and the setting ablaze of government buildings. Those involved in the riots now face trials in military courts, while PTI leaders experience repeated arrests and raids on their residences.

The political situation in Pakistan has become confusing, with a cycle of arrests, releases, and rearrests. PTI leaders continue to quit the party and leave politics, leaving people and pundits perplexed. The relentless cycle of arrests and rearrests seems to be breaking the spirits of PTI members, as seen in the recent departure of senior PTI leader Dr. Shireen Mazari and former Punjab information minister Fayyazul Hasan Chohan.

Imran Khan, in a previous interview with AFP, stated that his party has faced a crackdown for the past year. He believes that his removal from power was part of a conspiracy orchestrated by the former army chief. He further alleges that the violence that ensued was a staged conspiracy aimed at justifying the repression of his party.

As the unrest unfolded, more than 7,000 people were detained, and at least 19 senior PTI officials were arrested on accusations of instigating violence, some through overnight raids on their homes. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah countered Imran’s claims, stating that the terrorism and mobbing were pre-planned and carried out by Imran himself.

The potential ban on the PTI and the ongoing political instability in Pakistan underscores the deep divisions and tensions within the country’s political landscape, with significant implications for its governance and future direction.
