Dr Seemin Jamali, the former executive director of Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), passed away in Karachi on Saturday. She was 61 years old and had been battling cancer. Dr Jamali’s funeral prayers will be held at the JPMC mosque on Sunday.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed his grief over Dr Jamali’s demise, describing her as a brave and strong woman. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also expressed his condolences, highlighting Dr Jamali’s contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic and considering her death a significant loss for the health sector.
Dr Jamali had a distinguished medical career. She joined JPMC in 1988 as a medical officer and eventually became the executive director in 2016. Throughout her tenure, she introduced various initiatives in the public sector, including the establishment of an emergency care training program and a morgue and dog-bite treatment center. She also played a pivotal role in transforming the hospital’s emergency department into a state-of-the-art unit after a bomb blast occurred at its doors in 2010.
Dr Jamali received several national and international accolades during her 33-year service, including the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Women Achievement Awards. She retired from JPMC in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and remarkable contributions to the medical field.
