Following the violent episodes on May 9, where military installations, including the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the Corps Commander House in Lahore, were attacked after the arrest of PTI chairman Imran Khan, several PTI lawmakers and members have disassociated themselves from the party.
Fawad Chaudhry’s departure comes after former human rights minister Shireen Mazari and former Punjab minister Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan also resigned from the PTI in response to the violence that unfolded on May 9.
The events on May 9 sparked violent clashes throughout Pakistan after the arrest of Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court. Protests erupted in various cities, including remote and major ones, as PTI workers expressed their discontent over their leader’s arrest. Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad witnessed demonstrations, leading to authorities calling upon the armed forces to ensure law and order.
