Brendon McCullum, the head coach of the England cricket team, has expressed his confidence in the team’s fearless approach and their high-risk, high-reward ‘Bazball’ strategy as they prepare for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia.
Despite losing the previous Ashes series 4-0 in Australia, England has undergone a positive transformation under McCullum’s guidance, with 10 victories in their last 12 test matches since Ben Stokes assumed the captaincy.
McCullum conveyed to British media on Monday, “Who knows if we are going to win this summer, but we’re going to go into it with the right attitude, the right environment, and the right team which believes it’s got a chance.”
He further highlighted that England is a team that now knows how they want to play and is not afraid of losing, which he considers a remarkable trait. This fearless approach is led by the captain and supported by the senior players.
McCullum emphasized the importance of playing according to their own strategy, stating, “If we do play how we want to play, we give ourselves the best opportunity, and we’ve got the talent to put world-class teams under pressure.”
Prior to the first Ashes test at Edgbaston on June 16, England is scheduled to face Ireland in a one-off encounter starting on Thursday.
However, McCullum revealed that fast bowlers James Anderson (groin) and Ollie Robinson (ankle) will miss the Ireland test due to injuries. Nevertheless, they are expected to be available for the first Ashes match.
Regarding Ben Stokes, who faced injury setbacks during his time with the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, McCullum expressed optimism about his progress. He mentioned that Stokes is looking fit and in great form, adding, “I think he’ll bowl at some stage throughout the summer, no doubt.”
McCullum acknowledged Stokes as a world-class all-rounder and mentioned that if he is able to contribute with the ball, it would be fantastic. However, if Stokes is unable to bowl, the team will find alternative ways to maximize his impact.
As England prepares for the Ashes series, McCullum’s confidence in their approach and the team’s belief in their abilities set the stage for an exciting contest against Australia.
