Aurat March 2023: Protesters clash with police over alleged lathi charge

On International Women’s Day, the Aurat March 2023 outside the National Press Club Islamabad was highly disorderly.

A group of transgenders and women got into a heated argument with the police upon their arrival in March, with the women accusing the police of a lathi charge.

The women said that the police tortured them, it is the 21st century, and women are being prevented from protesting peacefully.

The organizers of the Aurat March also clashed with journalists, during which a female journalist and a cameraman were injured.

When Federal Minister Sherry Rehman arrived at the Women’s March, women and transgender people raised fierce slogans against the government and the Islamabad Police, on which Sherry Rehman went back. Sherry Rehman said that there is no justification for this violence on International Women’s Day.

According to the police spokesperson, three officials have been suspended, and action will be taken after determining those responsible.

Women participants marched from the Press Club to D-Chowk, and many men participated in the women’s march in solidarity.
