Islamabad: A judicial commission, appointed by the federal government to investigate audio leaks, has summoned Saqib Nisar’s son and other individuals associated with the case, according to sources.
The three-member commission, chaired by Supreme Court Judge Qazi Faez Isa, has issued summon notices to Saqib Talab, son of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, as well as Khawaja Tariq Raheem Advocate and Journalist Abdul Qayyum Siddiqui. The summoned individuals are required to appear before the commission on May 27.
The next meeting of the judicial commission is scheduled to take place on the same day in Courtroom No. 2 of the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the federal government submitted the record of alleged audio leaks to the three-member commission, including transcripts of eight audio leaks with the signatures of the relevant officer. The submitted record also contains the contact numbers of the people involved in the alleged audio leaks.
The judicial commission was formed by the federal government to investigate the multiple audio leaks related to the judiciary. Alongside Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the commission includes Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Islamabad High Court CJ Aamer Farooq. The commission has been given a timeframe of 30 days to complete its investigation.
However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan challenged the formation of the audio leaks judicial commission in the Supreme Court. Imran Khan argued that the commission should be struck down as no judge can be nominated for the commission without the consent of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. According to the plea, the Supreme Judicial Council is the only authorized body to initiate an investigation against a judge.
The commission’s head has announced that the proceedings will be made public and has instructed the Attorney General to provide mobile phones and SIM cards for further investigation.
