At least nine people lost their lives due to heavy rains that struck Hyderabad and other parts of Sindh in the past 48 hours, bringing gusty winds, hailstorms, and lightning that exacerbated the hardships faced by the people.
On Tuesday afternoon, Hyderabad and Kotri experienced heavy showers and hailstorms. Hailstones the size of golf balls caused damage to numerous vehicles and windows in Hyderabad’s SITE area. Strong winds uprooted trees and caused damage to vehicles.
The severe weather conditions disrupted normal life and severely impacted the electricity supply system of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) in the lower parts of Sindh. As a result, millions of people were left without electricity for several hours. The power supply was suspended from 53 Hesco feeders, and a tower of the 66Kv Mithi-to-Tando Jan Mohammad transmission line was damaged in New Kot and the surrounding area.
Loss of life was reported in Kotri city, where heavy rainfall claimed the lives of three children, while seven other people were injured. According to the police, the children, identified as Farhana (10 years old), Asma (11 years old), and Muhammad Yusuf (12 years old), were playing when a wall collapsed, resulting in their tragic deaths.
In another incident caused by lightning, residents of Sethar village suffered casualties. The victims include Vivek (16 years old), Govind (15 years old), Santosh (35 years old), Lalu (30 years old), Velu Kolhi (30 years old), and Pulji Kolhi (20 years old). Several others were injured, including Jhaman, Vilji, Nihal, Somaar, Basant, Tago, Tejo, and Villow.
It is important to note that the Meteorological Department has predicted rain and thunderstorms in various areas over the next 24 hours.
