Shahbaz Gill, a close aide to former Prime Minister Imran Khan who is currently in the United States, has officially registered himself as a foreign agent of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under the US Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA). The US Department of Justice has issued him a registration number.
Gill, who is facing sedition charges, was granted permission by the Lahore High Court (LHC) to travel abroad for two weeks. However, he later filed a new plea seeking an extension of his stay in the US.
According to the documents submitted on May 11, Gill informed US authorities about nine meetings he held with American citizens on behalf of PTI between April 19 and May 9 this year. These meetings primarily focused on discussing the current human rights violations in Pakistan.
The registration documents also include a written statement by Gill, in which he describes the nature and purpose of his activities as an agent in the US.
He clarified that his involvement is completely honorary and does not involve any financial charges. He expressed his belief in PTI’s vision and stated that as a political supporter, he aims to promote their struggle for democracy and the rule of law. He also intends to raise awareness among officials and people in the United States about the political challenges faced by the people of Pakistan and PTI.
Gill outlined his plans to meet with government officials, including congressional representatives, senators, and relevant officials from the State Department and Department of Justice. Additionally, he expressed his intention to attend public meetings, protests, and events organized by Pakistani Americans. The discussions during these interactions will focus on the current political crisis in Pakistan, human rights violations, and the erosion of freedom of speech.
His statement emphasized the goal of enhancing understanding about governance in Pakistan and highlighting the violation of democratic values in the country.
By registering as a foreign agent, Shahbaz Gill aims to contribute to PTI’s political struggle in the US by engaging with the public, officials, and relevant stakeholders to raise awareness and seek support for the party’s goals and ideals.
