On Sunday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah warned SBP officials against disbursing Rs21 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that the money would be “recovered” from whoever authorizes the payment.
The Supreme Court had ordered the central bank on April 14 to release the funds from Account No. I, a component of the Federal Consolidated Fund, for holding elections to the two dissolved provincial assemblies by April 17. The Interior Minister raised objections to the central bank’s decision to release the money and warned of penalties against those carrying out the payment.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has warned that anyone who authorizes the disbursement of Rs21 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would have to face the “recovery” of the amount.
He said that this is a very large amount to recover and could create many new problems. He added that there were “clear chances” that those making the payment could be held responsible for it in the future. Sanaullah also questioned how someone who does not have the authority to execute an act could exercise it on the Supreme Court’s orders, and said that the court’s order could be reviewed and even declared illegal.
