Sajal Aly is a Pakistani actor who has gained success both domestically and internationally, particularly in India. She made her Bollywood debut in the 2017 film Mom, starring alongside the late Sridevi, and received critical and commercial acclaim for her performance. Despite the ban on Pakistani actors in India after the 2016 Uri attacks, Aly still has fond memories of her time working in Bollywood and hopes to work there again in the future.
She believes that politics should not hinder the collaboration between artists and hopes that the barriers between India and Pakistan will eventually be removed. She also shared her fond memories of working with the late Sridevi in Mom and how they had a special bond beyond just work. Despite the tensions between the two countries, Aly maintains a close relationship with Sridevi’s daughter, Janhvi Kapoor. It’s always great to see artists transcending boundaries and bringing people together through their work.
Aly recently made her Hollywood debut with the romantic-comedy What’s Love Got to Do with It? earlier this year in February, directed by Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and featuring veteran actor Shabana Azmi. Speaking about her experience working with the Indian film industry, she said, “It was a dream come true moment for me…Un mein ek apnaniyat hai, jis mein bahut sukon hai [they have a sense of familiarity in them that I find very peaceful].”

Despite the tensions between India and Pakistan affecting the film industry, Aly maintains a close relationship with Indian actor Janhvi Kapoor, the daughter of Sridevi. Aly was very close to Sridevi and says that the late actor was like a mother figure to her.
