The opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) accused the PDM government of attempting to limit the powers of the Chief Justice and praised the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the government’s move. PTI also criticized the government’s decision to withhold funds for elections in Punjab, calling it a “political gimmick.”
The PTI’s senior vice president, Fawad Chaudhry, pointed out that the majority of the apex court had rejected the government’s attempt to curtail the Chief Justice’s powers, and as a result, the Supreme Court suspended the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023. Mr. Chaudhry expressed hope that the government would not make this an ego issue and described the standing committees’ denial of election funds as a political gimmick.
Hammad Azhar, the PTI’s central Punjab general secretary, questioned the significance of Rs20 billion in the context of Pakistan, while Senator Ejaz Chaudhry emphasized that elections are a fundamental right of the people and criticized the delay in holding them despite court rulings.
