ISLAMABAD: Nepra has expressed reservations over imposing an additional surcharge of 3.82 per unit in the electricity tariff.
In Nepra, the request of the federal government to impose an additional surcharge of Rs 3.82 per unit in the electricity tariff was heard.
Officials of the Power Division took a position that the debt of Power Holding Company is 800 billion rupees. The amount needs to be recovered from the already imposed surcharge of 0.43 per unit, so it has been decided to charge an additional surcharge of 3.39 units. The surcharge will be levied from March to June 2023.

Chairman Nepra said that if such surcharges are allowed, there is no chance that the power sector will improve. The simple solution everyone comes up with is a surcharge and then impose it. The first head charge has been imposed by the government itself. NEPRA is not sanctioning this surcharge today. First, determine whether we have the option to reject or approve.
NEPRA made the approval of the power holding surcharge subject to legal opinion. NEPRA said that the power division would first have a legal opinion and then the approval decision would be taken.
