Melbourne has overtaken Sydney to become Australia’s largest city by population.
Sydney was Australia’s largest city by population for over 100 years.
But in recent years Melbourne’s population has grown rapidly and the city has expanded.
According to government data, Melbourne’s population is 48,75,400, which is 18,700 more than Sydney’s.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said suburbs are being added to the city of Melbourne.
The figures are from June 2021 and have now been released, with Melton’s population becoming larger than Sydney’s after joining Melbourne.
This is not the first time that Melbourne has claimed the title of Australia’s largest city by population.
Earlier in the 19th century, Melbourne was the largest city in Australia, but it was replaced by Sydney in 1905.
