The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) has taken action by filing a first information report (FIR) with the Bhara Kahu police station after a dead common leopard was discovered with nearly a dozen bullets in its body.

Rina Saeed Khan, the chairperson of IWMB, has called the incident bizarre and stated that an investigation is underway.

The deceased leopard was found in a remote area beyond Quaid-i-Azam University near the border of Haripur District in Punjab, located in the far corner of the Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP), where IWMB does not have patrolling staff.

Despite not having patrolling staff in the area, the location where the dead common leopard was found was already under the IWMB’s radar following reports of hunting activities.

The IWMB discovered hideouts built by hunters near a pond or reservoir where they would wait for wild animals to come.

However, a camera trap study two years ago did not find any leopards in the area, which suggested that wildlife was thriving there, according to Ms. Khan, the chairperson of IWMB.

Nonetheless, the IWMB park rangers recovered the dead leopard and brought it to the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre for further examination.

Upon initial examination, it was discovered that the leopard’s tail, legs, and jaws were missing, and an x-ray report revealed 11 bullets in the body. To dispel doubts regarding the cause of death, the report also stated that the quills of an Indian porcupine were embedded in the body.

Under the Islamabad Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management) Ordinance of 1979, hunting, killing, or capturing wild animals is illegal. The common leopard is included in the third schedule of protected animals.

This is the second time a dead common leopard has been found this year, with the previous one having a hole in its skull. However, another leopard was recently rescued from a residential area and released back into its natural habitat.

To prevent hunting parties in the future, a post is being built for park rangers to monitor the area continuously, with the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority pledging complete support for the initiative.
