Noor Jehan, a 17-year-old elephant residing at the Karachi Zoo, has fallen into a pond within her enclosure, exacerbating her already ailing condition. The incident occurred on Thursday at 7:30 am and required a crane, ropes, and belts to lift her out of the cemented pond.
Noor Jehan has been an intensive care patient for the past three months, suffering from severe physical trauma. Her muscle mass has decreased, her spine appears disfigured, and her legs appear crooked.
Last week, Four Paws, an international animal welfare organization, sent a team of veterinarians to Karachi to examine Noor Jehan. The team concluded that the elephant had suffered from internal bleeding and a hematoma in her abdomen, likely caused by an injury sustained in the past few months. The team treated the elephant with medication but emphasized the need for intensive aftercare and provided the zoo with specific instructions to follow.
Unfortunately, it seems that the zoo has failed to adhere to these measures, and Noor Jehan’s health has continued to decline. She currently leans against a sand mound in her enclosure, appearing almost lifeless, with her eyes only partially open and minimal movement.
Concerns about the management of the Karachi Zoo have arisen as a result of Noor Jehan’s deteriorating condition, with many netizens calling out the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation for their handling of the situation.
