Pakistan Launches First Data Protection Service, Putting Citizens in Control of Personal Data
Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has introduced the country’s inaugural data protection service, Ijazat Aap Ki, empowering citizens to manage their own personal data.
The new service allows individuals to provide consent prior to identity card verification, ensuring their sensitive information remains secure at all times. Nadra has committed to protecting the confidentiality of citizens’ data through robust measures.
Nadra Chairman Tariq Malik stated that consent management is a digital mechanism in alignment with his goal to safeguard citizens’ privacy and bolster data security.
According to Malik, “Just like your physical property, your data is your personal property, and from now onwards, citizens are empowered to control access and protect it against misuse or unwarranted use.”

He further elaborated that service providers, including banks, would need citizens’ permission through a passcode before using their personal information. He also stressed the importance of citizens remaining vigilant in protecting their personal information and taking necessary precautions to prevent identity theft and fraud.
Starting from March 2, all verification transactions will require a 6-digit passcode sent to citizens’ registered mobile numbers, allowing them to give their consent before any data sharing occurs
The authentication PIN will serve as the citizens’ approval for Nadra to proceed with their ID number verification. Nadra will collect citizens’ mobile numbers during ID card registration and has introduced an SMS service to allow citizens to enroll their mobile numbers.
By sending a text message containing their 13-digit ID card number to 8009, citizens can register their mobile number with Nadra. The authority will send a confirmation message to the sender once the enrollment is successful.
