Major technology companies around the world have been trying to eliminate passwords for a long time.
Now, significant progress has been made by Google in this regard and passkey technology has been introduced for Google accounts.
PASS’s technology is designed as an alternative to passwords, allowing a user to access their account using a fingerprint ID, face, or PIN code on a phone or computer.
Apple first made this technology part of iOS 16, macOS Ventura, and iPadOS 16, while Microsoft is using it through its Authenticator app.
Unlike passwords, a pass is generated automatically.
A user needs to create a passkey for each device or operating system or app they use, which can also be shared between devices.
This cryptographic passkey is stored on the device and a public key is uploaded to a Google server.
The experience for users will be exactly the same as when they use password autofill.
Google said in a statement that the technology would make it impossible for others to access people’s accounts because passwords and biometrics stored on the device could never be shared.
The company said the technology is being introduced on World Password Day and marks the beginning of the end of passwords for Google Accounts.
According to Google, this technology is still in its early stages and will be adopted for other apps and websites in the near future.
If a device equipped with a passkey is lost, it will be possible for the user to prevent access to it through the account settings.
