The Election Commission, in conjunction with the Governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is set to consult on Monday on the recent decision of the Lahore High Court to set a date for the upcoming elections in Punjab.
In light of the court’s decision, the Election Commission must consult both governors before issuing a schedule for the upcoming elections in Punjab. Yesterday, the Lahore High Court ordered the Election Commission to give the date of the elections in Punjab. By doing so, the Election Commission ensures that all parties involved are given a fair chance to prepare for the elections. The Lahore High Court has issued a favorable ruling in favor of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf regarding the election date in Punjab.

The Lahore High Court issued a 16-page written decision this week, which stated that the Election Commission should announce the date of the direct election in Punjab. The decision also noted that the 90 days given in the constitution should be at most. No authority must provide a date if the assembly dissolves without the Governor’s signature.
In response to the court’s decision, Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry asked the Election Commission to release the date and schedule of the election by the day after tomorrow.
Fawad Chaudhry has been asserting from the very start that martial law is the only viable solution and that there’s no room for further delaying the election. As per the Constitution, it is the responsibility of the Governor to announce the election date.
